Summary:In the context of international relations with States, the Catholic Church enters into various bilateral agreements, some of which are referred to by the term «protocol». These protocols are generally connected to a concordat agreement “main”, and they tend that will complete or specify the content. The present study has the aim of analyzing the particular function performed by the protocols in the sphere of relations “concordat”, and to examine its material contents. Under the functional aspect, the study shows that the protocols may have different goals between them. In fact, depending on the cases and circumstances, their function appears to be additive in nature, broad, integrative, clarification, or merely explanatory and interpretative than the “main” text of the concordat. In terms of content, the research highlights the existence of different types of protocols. In some cases, the protocols deal with a number of matters of common interest, state and confessional. In other cases, however, the protocols governing specific and well-defined materials: such as, for example, marriage, education, spiritual assistance, institutions, property and the ecclesiastical heritage.
