Description
Summary:Departing from some points of a historical character, the article reconstructs the close relationship that since beginnings of the preaching of the Good News has been established between the Christian communities and thier territory. The various historical vicissitudes have always consolidated such relationship such that the territorial aspect used has prevailed as an instrument of supervising the Christian life lived by the faithful and their access to the sacraments, together with a canonically defined exercise of jurisdiction by clerics, and in particular, the parish priest. Making treasure of the positive contributions of the Council of Trent and the previous codification, but getting an inspiration from the innovative principles of Vatican II, the code has offered a new vision of parish, characterized as communitas fidelium; in this renewed vision, the terretorial criterion, notwithstanding conserving ist own importance, is meant to be an identifying element but not an essential one. Finally, with reference to the current territorial reorganization throughout many dioceses by means of the constitution of pastoral units, the article highlights some fallbacks which the nenewed relationship between the parish and the territory could have as regards ist vision and that of the presidential ministry of the parish priest.
