Summary:Notwithstanding that during the proceedings of the revision of the Code the prevalent orientation was that of understanding religiosus as a "religious in perpetual vows"l, the authentic interpretation of can. 684 § 3 considers instead the proper meaning of the referred term which, unless otherwise specified, could indicate either a religious in perpetual vows or one in temporal profession. Such meaning, however, has to be limited to the mentioned paragraph and could not be extended to other hypotheses that are disciplined by the canon in question. One should not forget, indeed, that monastic institutes, albeit they form part of the category of religiois institutes, have a particular nature which legislation needs to recognize and respect
