| Summary: | Although he promises to set forth all the details of the Bible each in its proper place, Josephus in fact rearranges many words and episodes. In this he accords with the principles set forth by Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Diodorus, Pseudo-Longinus, and Quintilian. In the narrative portions of his paraphrase of the Bible he not only takes liberties with the actual details but he carefully avoids non sequiturs and digressions within a given episode, preserves continuity on a given subject once he has begun it, adheres to a logical and temporal sequence and a causal relationship between events, provides a smoother transition between episodes, clarifies connections, omits or abbreviates embarrassing details, answers anti-Jewish charges, increases the dramatic tension in a rhetorically sophisticated manner, enhances romantic elements, maintains the emphasis on key figures, adds to the greatness of Moses in particular, increases respect for non-Jewish leaders, avoids duplications, avoids discrepancies and contradictions, and explains details that are not apparent from the biblical text. |
