Summary: | Within the spectrum of Protestantism in Germany, the established „Free Churches“, whose roots trace back to the first half of the 19th century, have developed their distinct means of working with children and youth. Special attention was and is given to adolescents during the sensitive period between 12 and 14 years, the age when their Lutheran or Reformed classmates are preparing for their confirmation. For the very first time, the present article examines and compares the equivalents of „confirmation work“ in the contexts of three minority Churches in Germany, such are the Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche (United Methodist Church, www.emk.de), the Bund Evangelisch-freikirchlicher Gemeinden (Baptists, www.baptisten.de) and the Bund Freier Evangelischer Gemeinden (Free Evangelicals, www.feg.de). Between 2012 and 2017 the Second National And International Study of Confirmation Work in Europe has been completed (www.confirmation-research.eu), carried out as a comparison study among 11 different churches in 9 countries, including the Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche in Germany. This is why in the article also presents the newest data of the nationwide full-scale survey of Methodist adolescents and workers in this auspicious field of Christian youth work (www.ku-studie.de). |
