Description
Summary:For St. Bonaventure, mankind, before sin, was able to "read" in creation, just as in a book, the "traces" of God. When, instead, sin has dimmed his eye, the incarnation of the Word became "necessary" to heal him and bring him back to the Father. The redeemed man, therefore, enlightened by the grace of the Spirit, can recognize God in creation or, as A. Schmemann says, can "see" everything that exists as a "sacrament" of God's presence and love and an instrument of communion with Him. Saint Bonaventure, then, puts it in close association to the reparatio, or the salvation accomplished by Christ, with the adoptive relationship of man, which would constitute the fruit or even the completion. Therefore, in the end, the result is that the "sons in the Son" are properly those who, by participating already by the Spirit in the life of God, can recognize it, love it and praise it in creation and through it.
