| Summary: | In 2005 Prof. Dr. Thomas Pola (University Dortmund) and his team of archaeologists and the Department of Antiquities of Jordan (DOA), Amman, started excavations on the Tulul (hills)adh-Dhahab in the Lower Wadi az-Zarqa (Jabbok). They discovered a colossal wall (6 m height; 60 m length) on the middle of the westside of the west hill. Corner column (4,42 m height) of two peristyles (9 m x 12 m) and (10 mx 12 m) were found. The place could be Amathoûs, the greatest stronghold of those occupied beyond the Jordan (Jos. Ant 13, 356). The adjacent ford correlates the topography of Jacob wrestles with God (Gen 32,23–32). The preexilic town Pnuel (Gen 32,23-33; Jg 8,1–17; 1Kings 12,25) could be localized here. |
