Summary: | In this article, the German Minister of Finance describes his understanding of the relationship between religion and politics as well as their differences. The commemoration of the Reformation teaches us that religion is a significant factor in politics. There are elements of the Reformation that are both ambivalent as well as supportive towards democracy. The Reformation’s European rather than its German dimensions should be seen and remembered. Politics welcomes religion as a motivation to participate in politics; however, religion must also accept its limititation within the constraints of the political sphere. |
