Description
Summary:This article explores the possible contributions that the book of Amos can make to contemporary debates on worship. It begins with insights from interpretive anthropology that demonstrate that religious rituals shape and sanction how a people understand their identity and mission. Passages in Amos share this concern in at least three areas: Worship should question reigning ideologies (7:9-17; 9:1), grapple with the realities of life (4:4-13; 5:4-6), and nurture a commitment to justice (5:18-27; 8:3-6). These same issues are relevant for discussions today, which often consider other criteria for evaluating worship.
