Summary: | There are two ways in which the soul can be an object of naturalistic approaches: 1) as explanandum – something which is supposed to be explained away by modern science; 2) as explanans – here the soul is seen as a part of an old explanatory system which will be replaced by modern scientific theories. I argue that explanandum-approaches are inadequate because they presuppose strawmenconcepts of soul as objects of scientific explanations (ethereal body, homunculus). The explanans-approaches seem to be more promising: In the Aristotelian tradition the concept >soul< is used for explanatory purposes. As formal cause, though, the concept of soul cannot be compared with or replaced by theories in neuroscience or cognitive psychology; its explanatory role consists in the integration and interprétation of scientific evidence. It is above all this integrative funetion of >soul< that allows it to link – or to integrate – biological and mental descriptions with each other. As such the hylomorphic concept of soul presents an alternative to naturalistic approaches; its top-down explanations avoid the explanatory gaps of physiealistie bottom-up strategies and offer a structure for Connecting scientific results with common sense intuitions. |
