Summary: | This article considers the important office of the "syndicus apostolicus" in the Franciscan Order. It begins with a brief historical presentation of the office, discussing some papal constitutions about this kind of financial administrator (oeconomus religiosus) during the XIII-XVI centuries. Economic matters were important in the life of each religious community; as a result "sindaci apostolici" were appointed by provincial ministers, and they enjoyed many privileges. The research is based on unpublished Vatican sources, in particular an important decree issued in 1710 by the Sacred Congregation for the Council. The article draws out the legal connections between the syndicus, Superiors in the Order and the diocesan bishop. |
