Description
Summary:This article compares three speeches held at different times by Eberhard Jüngel addressing the theme of Judgement Day. Two of these have not been published but exist as hand-outs from sessions in Berlin (1989) and Aarhus (2000). Jüngel opts for the view that the redeemed human person has a freedom of choice, which - for the first time - will enable him to choose between salvation or damnation. This eschatological position, however, has unclear anthropological implications. It is also inconsistent with other writings of Jüngel, and the position is abandoned in the article he actually published in 2003 in his book "Ganz Werden" under the title "Die Weltgeschichte ist das Weltgericht". - Jüngels eschatology is analyzed in its relation to his understanding of justification and with attention to Jüngels overall christological focus. It is suggested that the metaphor of Judgement Day is better used in terms of illuminating the hope in resurrection as eternal life, rather than being interpreted as describing a moment in a temporal sequence from resurrection to eternal life. Furthermore it adopts Jüngels fruitful language concerning the ontological priority of possibility over reality as presented in "Gott als Geheimnis der Welt", while further developing his understanding of eternal life as Verewigung in his earlier work of eschatology: Tod.
