Summary: | The situation of Christianity in post-communist Ukraine is not only shaped by the persecutions and prohibitions during the past century but also by a long and difficult history forming an independent Christianity and ecclesiology. This is both a chance and a burden, given the confrontation of eastern and western traditions. The use of Slavic language and mentality develops a model of the church geared towards the Ukrainian people and at the same time attempts to bridge the gap between the estranged positions of orient and occident.. The Ukrainian church is marked by a long and worldwide history as a diaspora community, and at the same time faces a secularized post-Christian society within Ukraine. The Ukrainian church must mediate in this situation between Christianity and the modern situation of the society. This will be a service to the universal church as well. |
