Description
Summary:For that part of contemporary theology which explores the kenosis of the incarnate Word and seeks to reflect on God's covenant with man in a respect for their repective autonomy, the thought and exegesis of Maxime the Confessor concerning the Saviour's agony remains a model of christological reflection. This VIIth century Byzantian theologian, a brilliant and fearless defender of Christ's human will, was able to show how the Saviour freed human liberty from its alienations by appropriating it in his initial wish to escape death in order to convert it into his obedience to the Father. His Opuscula testify to a progressive transposition of the traditional coupling nature/person in the order of liberty, linking the reason of nature with the personal mode of decision.
