Description
Summary:For the Reformed Churches of the Calvinist family, the doctrinal authority of the Church serves the edification of the believers, but it can not be determinative as regards salvation. Its importance is secondary in comparison with the authority of the Word of God itself. Confessions of faith or doctrinal declarations, even though playing a normative and regulating rôle, are the provisional and revisable trace of listening to this Word. Exemplified by the Reformed Church of France this paper investigates the increasing importance of debate in the exercise of this authority in the complex organisation of the traditional presbyterian synodal system.
