Description
Summary:This article offers a brief examination of the current implementation of Islamic law in several states of Nigeria. It outlines the reasons for establishing shari'a courts, people's responses to them, and areas of probable political compromise (given vehement opposition from predominantly Christian states). Instead of having a single uniform legal system throughout the country, Nigeria will operate a range of legal procedures that will differ from state to state. The economic and political consequences of these differences remain to be seen. (Pol afr/ DÜI)
