Summary:In both ordinary conversations and political debates the feeling is often expressed that everything is becoming less secure. The evidence cited includes the supposed or real rise in crime, the growth in traffic and the coarsening of road users' behaviour, precarious unemployment conditions, polluted food and global military threats. But the feeling of increasing insecurity is far from as new as people think. The people on whose experiences the bible is based knew that the security of their lives was threatened in many ways.
