Description
Summary:Chapter 6 in the Fourth Gospel on Jesus Christ as the bread of life reveals a coherent composition. As a 'Gospel within the Gospel' John 6:1–71 contains the whole Johannine testimony – expressed in the biblical metaphor of bread as God's nourishment for his people. The 'bridges' between John 5 and 6, the structural network of the circle of Jewish feasts in John 5 to 10 ('From Jerusalem to Jerusalem') and the Johannine emphasis on Jesus elusiveness demonstrate the integration of this typical Johannine scene into the narrative architecture and theology of the Johannine Gospel. The characteristic style of relecture ("Fortschreibung"), of variation and amplification (réécriture = "Um-Schreibung") in John 6 leads the reader to a mystagogic way of Christian faith, that overcomes misunderstandings and insufficient confessions. The aim of biblical believe, participation in God's everlasting endurance (cf. John 6:27), which is eternal life, is accessible through the confession to Jesus Christ as God's eschatological bread of life and through the sacramental communion with him in the eucharist.
