Summary: | The first time I heard the words "Never waste a catastrophe!", they were spoken with an Australian accent during a hearing at the United Nations, in New York, May 2013. The topic was "Sustainability and the Future of the Planet". The speaker was describing how a recent catastrophic drought in Australia had provided an unexpected opportunity: it had enabled the disastrous state of the entire Murray-Darling River System to begin to be restored to health. He argued that such had been the political stasis on this critical issue that only a mammoth disaster such as this was able to begin the processes necessary to unlock it. |
