| Summary: | This article starts with a historical truism: ”The Reformation is more than Martin Luther.” This is obviously a truism, and yet, especially in the Scandinavian debate, Luther still dominates almost everything that is said about the Reformation. This is not only a confessional problem, but describes a more general cultural habitus. First, the article sets out to show how the discourse about modernity has hijacked Luther and the reformation. The main example is the French philosopher Michel Foucault and his critical understanding of modernity and truth, which he occasionally relates to Luther and protestantism, as if these were pivotal modern phenomena. Secondly, an attempt is made to give a broad and multidimensional overview of the early Reformation in Germany and Switzerland, focusing a variety of persons, places and events. This is done in dialogue with the example of Foucault, in order to provoke a discussion about the plurality of Reformation compared to standard images in our time |
