Description
Summary:Martin Luther's relation with German mystic, once quite neglected by the critics, is now a major theme not only for those who research his sources, but also for those who want to have a deeper understanding of his theology. Since his youth, Martin, already a sensitive personality, had many chances to widen his perception of the spiritual dimension of life: he briefly attended a school run by the Brothers of The Common Life; he had some strong spiritual experiences; under the direction of Johann Staupitz, he extensively read the works of Meister Eckhart, Johann Tauler, Heinrich Seuse. Later on he happened to found a little book by an anonymous author, which contained what to him looked like «a pure, solid theology, most similar to the ancient one». Between 1516 and 1518 he published not less than three editions of this work, whose title he wanted to be Theologia deutsch, to stress its identity against the one coming from Rome. This article analyses both this book and one of Luther's works, De libertate christiana, looking for similarities and differences, in order to verify how deep and lasting the influence of German mystic on Luther was.
