Summary: | Vatican II postulates that theology according to the Scriptures should nourish the judgment of the Church; it imagines that "the sacred page is, as it were, the soul of sacred theology" (Dei verbum 24). Therefore, a self-critical reflection on theology as a whole and on exegesis in particular is indicated. It is the call of the Council to discover the plurality and the unity of the Scripture. This is to be concretized and to be mediated by means of the main efforts of exegesis which has to bring together philological analyses, historical reconstructions, and theological interpretations. To fulfill these tasks there is need for a theology of the Word of God that is rooted in the Scriptures. This becomes possible by way of dialouge with the other disciplines of theology which must find their own access to the Bible in order to be ready for discourse with exegesis in their reception of the Council and reflected witness of the faith. |
