Description
Summary:The problem of how to speak convincingly about God has been one of the major challenges for systematic theology in this Century. In the last decade this perspective has led to a renewed discussion about the importance of a theodicy and about the place theology as God-talk can take over in history and society. This article deals with the meaning of the term,God in crisis' which was introduced by J. B. Metz in the debate. It is a review of this concept, which brings his entire theology into focus. In the second part the article takes a distance to his approach, especially in so far as its formal aspect is concerned. The intra-extra-constellation of Vatican II theology considering faith and time, especially as dealt with in ‚Gaudium et spes‘, is put against Metz's mixture of crisis and God. To speak about God means to underline a distance to the different Holys in history. It has a religious characteristic or signature to it, which is determined by the times of a crisis. On this foundation the third step gives a proposai for speaking about God, according to this difference with other talks about the Holy: the ‚passivum divinum‘. It is characterized by pointing to God in a context of power. By speaking in this way theology reveals God without selling God's name for anyone's use. A theology based on the.passivum divinum' can take on the Problems of its language of which Metz is rightly making an issue, but for which the term of,God in crisis' is itself a Symptom.
