| Summary: | "The Gospel as public truth" is the key theme of Lesslie Newbigin's missiology. This article explores the meaning of this term, and its implications for apologetics and for the Church’s social and political action in society. Instead of accepting the separation of facts and values which characterizes Western society, Christians should demonstrate, by their words and their actions, the relevance of the gospel for all aspects of human life. This cannot be done by presenting (supposedly) neutral rational arguments, since the gospel defines a fiduciary framework that is radically different from that of the Age of Enlightenment. Religious freedom itself is best understood from a Christian perspective. The Church’s involvement in society goes hand in hand with the explicit proclamation of Jesus. The Church is a sign of the coming Kingdom but does not bring it about |
