Summary: | Psychoanalysis and Christian spiritual formation are both processes intended to result in deep change. In the context of clinical encounters, working at the crossroads between the two potentiates the possibility of transformation. Points of resonance and dissonance between psychoanalysis and spiritual formation are presented and briefly discussed, followed by The Case of Jane, a narrative by Anita Sorenson articulating her work with a professionally successful and personally traumatized woman who was suffering from protracted grief following the death of her twin sister. The story of their work together, from the circumstances of the referral to the ending of their relationship when Jane died, is full of moments of meeting where God's presence is palpable. Their pilgrimage through grief, an extraordinary intersubjective journey, resulted in transformation for both Anita and Jane. Theresa Tisdale and Earl Bland provide reflections drawing from classic spirituality, theology, anthropology, and self psychology. |
