| Summary: | One could hardly find trace of the political interpretation of Shiite martyrism before the revolutionary movement which entailed in the Islamic Republic in 1979. Shiite tradition has always set up ceremonial commemorations of martyrs and mourning rituals, but it was generally to get rid of the temptation of mixing up religion with political affairs. Shiite dolorism was rooted in the failure of the Imam's quest for worldly power and the eventual acceptation of separation between the realms of spirituality and secular affairs. Shariati (d. 1977), who had a great impact on the mobilization of young Muslim intellectuals before the Revolution has revisited the history of the Imams and specially of the martyrdom of Hoseyn, seen as models of political mobilisation aiming at ideological targets. At the same time, in Iranian clerical centers, a book, which denied the supernatural character of the Imam and turned him to a militant of justice and political rights, has raised many polemics. These new approaches to Shiite martyrdom became reality in a huge dramaturgy, at a global size, in the great demonstrations of the Revolution. Suicide attacks, which are nowadays mainly practised by Sunnis, are neither an invention of Shiite Islam nor the ultimate key for the understanding of this particular form of Islam.
