| Summary: | This study places the polemic of the Christian apologists of the second century against sacrifices within the context of a contemporary pagan religious structure of feeling: beside the criticisms of cultic excess and anthropomorphism, we find more advanced positions linking the persistence of traditional cults to a symbolic conception of sacrifice, in the context of the "tripertita thoelogia". The Christian criticism turns out to be extremely radical even when compared to these positions: the true cult is celebrated in the inner meeting with the Christian God, accessible to everyone without need of the mediation of the cult and external sacrifice. The ethical form of the Christian gives external visibility to the inner adherence and knowledge of the one true God. |
