| Summary: | The present article deals with theological ideas behind the Levites. On the basis of Num 3-4 and related texts (e.g., Num 8), the origin of the Levites is connected with the death of the firstborn and they redeem the Israelites from their obligation to sacrifice their firstborn instead (Exod 13:2; Num 3:11-13). Therefore the Levites experience in a symbolic death on behalf of the Israelite firstborn as living sacrifices. They also atone for the Israelites and complete the installation of the cult. Der Artikel behandelt die theologischen Vorstellungen hinter den Leviten im Ausgang von Num 3-4 und ihren Verbindungen. Die Leviten wurzeln in der Erschlagung der ägyptischen Erstgeburt und befreien die Israeliten vom Gebot der Erstgeburtsheiligung Ex 13,2 durch ihr realsymbolisches Opfer. Somit sterben die Leviten zugunsten der Israeliten und ermöglichen den Zugang zum Kult, indem sie dessen Installation abschließen und das Volk entsühnen. |
