| Summary: | Already in the sixteenth century, Catholic reformers attributed the problems of the Church of their time to episcopal absenteeism, that is to say, to the fact that numerous bishops did not reside in their dioceses and rather often relied on bishops in partibus, who acted as their substitutes, and who had the title of 'suffragan' bishops. These 'suffragan' bishops have not yet far been the object of any serious study. This article aims to fill at least a part of this gap and to show that thanks to them the situation of the dioceses in question was much less catastrophic than was long claimed. Déjà au XVIe siècle, les réformateurs catholiques attribuaient les maux de l'Église de leur temps à l'absentéisme épiscopal, c'est-à-dire au fait que de très nombreux évêques ne résidaient pas dans leurs diocèses et s'en remettaient assez souvent à des évêques in partibus, qui agissaient comme leurs suppléants, avec le titre d'évêques «suffragants». Jusqu'à une époque récente, nombre d'historiens abonderont dans le même sens. Mais ces évêques «suffragants» n'ont fait jusqu'ici l'objet d'aucune étude sérieuse. La présente contribution vise à combler du moins en partie ce vide et à démontrer que grâce à eux la situation des diocèses en question était beaucoup moins catastrophique qu'on ne l'a longtemps prétendu. |
