Description
Summary:This essay identifies parallels in René Girard’s reflections on the experience of violence and suffering and Bernard Lonergan’s understanding of the Law of the Cross. Their works help to illuminate how the total self-offering of Christ out of love functions to reorient interpersonal knowing and to constitute a community that has the form of the Suffering Servant, the form of divine love that overcomes mimetic desire and violence.
