Summary: | In a first part, some basic questions about bible translation are presented, followed by some information about mediaeval German (and other) translations and the longstanding tension between interest in the Bible and the ban on Bible translation. The second part deals with Luther's translation of the New and the Old Testament, its contemporary and scholarly background, the translation team, the characteristics of the translation, and its relation to and impact on other translations, its recent revision, and its ecumenical context. In the third part, several examples from the revised text of the Old and the New Testament (Luther-Bible 2017) are supplied and the implied methodological questions are discussed. |
