Summary: | The rise of early Christianity is one of the most puzzling phenomena in the history of religion. The refusal of early Christians to take part in the public cults and sacrificial feasts in honour of the gods and the emperor, which were always an expression of loyalty to the Roman Empire and its representatives, caused extreme disconcertment in the ancient world. But a range of Christianity’s attractive factors made up for the irritations. Of these factors the ability to provide religious experiences has too long been overlooked in current research. |
