Summary: | Cranach's tablet with the decalogue is a masterpiece of the early 16th century. Created in Wittenberg in 1516, it is not yet influenced by the later reformer Martin Luther. It makes use of humanistic freedom to revise and update the text of the Bible in an independent way: Cranach brings in motifs of the renaissance (starting with the Venus in field 1) and arranges the ten commandments in an order influenced by Augustine, Gerson, and the Septuagint. |
