Summary: | Martin Luther's protest against indulgences was the starting point of the Reformation. Indulgences originated during the beginnings of the crusades. This study renders evidence for the supposition that the roots from which indulgences sprang reached considerably further back - in fact into the first two Christian centuries. Consequently, the Reformation not only parted from certain developments and institutions of the Medieval Church but also from some basic notions of Christian faith and ethics as old as Christianity itself. |
