| Summary: | In the wake of the second Vatican council, the dioceses of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other German-speaking countries collaborated to produce the first official Roman Catholic Bible in German. Translated between 1962 and 1979, it was authoritative for Roman Catholic practice. 40 years later, it became necessary to revise this edition in line with current scholarship. Under an episcopal executive committee, a group of approximately 60 scholars reviewed all the books of the Bible according to the newest critical editions. They deleted minor mistakes and limited linguistic liberties in the translation of the source text. Overall, the character of the so-called Unity Translation was maintained, however, including the use of an elevated Standard German and loanwords. On the other hand, archaisms, vulgarisms, and neologisms were avoided. The revised version will play an important role in congregational life as well as in ecumenical dialogue in the future. |
