The author’s contribution starts by analyzing an American website offering egg freezing and egg donation to young women who are searching for a prevention strategy against age-related infertility, thus outlining the social and cultural context of reproductive decision-making and reproductive autonomy. Against the background of a relational concept of autonomy an introduction is given into the legal and medical situation of egg freezing and egg donation in Austria and objections are made against social egg freezing from a theological and ethical point of view. As vulnerability is both part of the human condition and compatible with a secular bioethical discourse, it might become a key corrective to the prima facie principle of autonomy and deserves to be developed in a gender-sensitive way |
