Summary: | Old Catholic ecclesiology is an episcopal-synodal and baptismal-eucharistic ecclesiology of the local church. As such, it is a blueprint ecclesiology which is widely respected but not always easily applicable to “fresh expressions” of church. This article explores ways to connect mainstream Old Catholic ecclesiology to ecumenical, pastoral, diaconal and missionary challenges. The administration of the sacraments to baptised members of other churches is explained within the context of Old Catholic ecclesiology. The centrality of the eucharist is understood in a non-exclusive way as a “centrifugal centre”. But where the eucharist is downplayed as merely one possible ecclesial “form”, Old Catholic ecclesiology should uphold the inextricability of “content” and “form” as it comes to a faith that wants to be “consonans eucharistiae”. |
