| Summary: | This paper has tried to show that the ecumenical conferences which took place in Europe, America, Africa and Asia between 1900 and 1958 and which were attended by delegates from the various missionary bodies at the time advocated the use of African religious and cultural values in the Christianisation of Africa. ... The paper asserts that the Roman Catholic missionaries in Africa, especially in Igboland in Nigeria have, since 1902, continued to show greater interest in adopting indigenous ideas and values in the evangelization endeavours more than the protestant missionaries to whom the mandates were issued. The author concludes by claiming that behind the non-implementation of ecumenical mission mandates in African religion and culture by missionaries in the field lies the force of African converts especially those who become evangelists, preachers, catechists, agents and station teachers who desired to destroy the old order that they thought had oppressed and dehumanized them. ...
