Summary: | Through a study of the Namasudra-Muslim disturbances that occured in May 1911 in the Jessore-Khulna region of eastern Bengal, the author argues that collective action was imperative for submerged groups to establish their self-image. In order to achieve this goal of self-affirmation both communities used various symbols, both verbal and non-verbal. In order to vindicate the honour of their communities, the Muslims and the Namasudras sometimes fought among themselves and sometimes combined to fight their common adversaries. (DÜI-Sen) |
