Summary: | Penuel, the biblical site of Jacob's encounter with God, has become an allegory for the theological difficulty of putting the revelation in Jesus Christ into language. At the moment atheism suggests that it occupies Penuel more effectively than Christian theology. Atheism is thus a challenge this study exemplifies with a look at the theses of Christopher Higgins concerning faith as a matter of privacy outside of the sphere of scientific knowledge. Yet Higgins errs in dividing reality into private and scientific spheres, and systematic theology shows this with a discourse on the way of speaking of God in terms of presence and non-presence. |
