Description
Summary:Pietist and pre-Pietist writings from the late 17th and early 18th c. - by Theophilus Grossgebauer (1661), Johann Muscovius (1694), Philipp Jakob Spener (1675), Andreas Werckmeister (1691), Gottfried Vockerodt (1697), Georg Motz (1703), and Heinrich Müller - are examined for evidence of criticism of church music practices of their time, for opposition to artistic, operatic style in church music, and for appropriateness of the application of terms such as subjectivity, privatism, and individualism in differentiating orthodox Lutheran from Pietist thinkers. J.S. Bach's relationship to Pietism is suggested by his possession of several books by Heinrich Müller, his affinity with the devotional movement, and his inclination toward mysticism.
