Er betrachtet die abendländische Kultur dabei weder als ein Produkt des Zufalls noch der Zwangsläufigkeit, sondern erkennt in ihr vielmehr eine umfassende Aufbauleistung des Geistes, die von fünf Schlüsselmomenten strukturiert wird: die Erfindung der Polis und der Wissenschaft durch die Griechen, die Erfindung des Privatrechts und des Humanismus durch Rom, die ethische und eschatologische Prophezeiung der Bibel, die "päpstliche Revolution" des elften bis dreizehnten Jahrhunderts und schließlich alles, was man gemeinhin als die großen demokratischen Revolutionen der Neuzeit bezeichnet.
