| Summary: | Abstract: The title of this dissertation indicates a double objective: to formulate a theory of poetry and the sacred, and to study a nineteenth-century French poet, Baudelaire. The question of the one hand the sacred origins of poetry; and on the other the presence of the sacred in a world that is no longer religious. Starting from the equation of poetry and the sacred, one may hope to cast an entirely new light on the ever much considered-but scarcely understood-question of paradox in Baudelaire. From the Satanical religion of the dandy to the project of extracting beauty from evil, one encounters a sequence of inversions presenting, in sum, an upside-down religion and upside-down aesthetics. These inversions are, moreover, never simple, as the mechanisms of constitution are identical to those of disintegration, the gesture of affirmation inseparable from that of negation, and counter-religion remains, nevertheless, a religion. The intention of this dissertation is to consider the paradoxes of Baudelaire's poetry in relation to the ambiguities of the sacred. One may hope in this manner to elucidate this further paradox inherent in the writing of Baudelaire - who stands nonetheless as the first poet of modernity - consisting in the return to religion in an elaboration of avant-gards aesthetics.
