Description
Summary:In 1961, the programmatic text Offenbarung als Geschichte (Revelation as History) appeared. Its authors claimed to give the idea of God's revelation a sounder biblical basis than what they judged to be the case in the prevailing ‘Word of God' theology. The present article shows how Pannenberg in the years thereafter deepened the conception of revelation as history by unfolding the doctrine of the Trinity. He claims with his Trinity-secured concept of revelation as history to take up the basic idea of the biblical witness concerning the action of the one God in and on the world, thereby attaching to the Christ event singular meaning for knowledge of God, self, and world while also understanding the eschaton as God's definitive self-manifestation to creatures. The author traces the basic lines of Pannenberg's development that are characteristic of the whole and calls for evaluating his claim to incorporate the biblical witness, to reflect it systematically in his idea of the one God, and thereby to facilitate religious assurance.
