Description
Summary:During the first half of the seventeenth century, many sermon manuscripts, treatises and passion meditations were written down in the semi-enclosed community of spiritual virgins ("klopjes"), called the Hoeck, in Haarlem, Dutch Republic. There was no need for printed versions of these devotional texts, since these manuscripts only served the internal communication and devotional-mystic education. Applying a model of textual analysis, this article examines a selection of codices with devotional-mystic texts, on communication patterns and interaction strategies. As writer and editor, the virgin Mayken de Graef broadened the communicative possibilities of the medium and revealed differences in communication strategy between two preachers, the father-confessors Cornelis Arentz and Joost Cats. As a preacher, Arentz is characterized being in dialogue with the audience with a variety of interaction strategies, by which readers would be spiritually activated. The preacher Cats presents cognitive-intellectual treatises in top-down monologues and passion meditations with didactically justified instructions. In writing and editing, the writer Mayken de Graef appears to be conversant with the religious manuscript culture and humanistic book conventions. She presents the sermon volumes, treatises and passion meditations as vigorous religious media to activate the meditation process of her reading spiritual sisters, as well as their community spirit.
