This implies that Papias can no longer be treated as evidence for the hypothesis that for the congregations in the west of the Roman province of Asia the institution of an episkopos of the local church had already developed in the second quarter of the second century ce. | ||
| 520 | |a Die kritische Analyse der entsprechenden Ausführungen des Eusebius von Caesarea läßt die Annahme zumindest nicht unplausibel erscheinen, daß der Hinweis des Kirchenvaters, daß Papias das Amt eines episkopos in der asianischen Stadt Hierapolis bekleidet habe, nicht auf Eusebius vorliegenden, historisch zutreffenden Informationen beruht, sondern eine nacheusebianische Konstruktion darstellt. Diese Annahme ist geeignet, die historische Zuverlässigkeit des papianischen Episkopats zu erschüttern; das aber bedeutet, daß die Person des Papias nicht mehr als Beleg für die Annahme, daß sich in den im Westen der römischen Provinz Asia zu lokalisierenden Gemeinden die Institution eines ortsgemeindlichen episkopos bereits im zweiten Viertel des 2. Jh. n.Chr. verfestigt habe, in Anspruch genommen werden kann. | ||
