Description
Summary:Among the many undertakings of Fr Diego Laínez (1512-1565, second Jesuit Superior General 1558-65) was the reading of "Sacred Lectures", an activity proper to a minister of the word in the Society of Jesus. Between the years of 1557 and 1558, Laínez developed a series of thirty lectures about prayer in the Jesuit church in Rome, a manuscript copy of which is preserved at ARSI. The overall aim of these lectures was to communicate to a broad public the importance of prayer in the life of the Christian. In the development of the texts, we observe an interest in conveying an incarnate understanding of prayer in daily life. At the same time, through these lectures, we can identify a historical shift that was taking place in the Church and its relationship with the Protestant Reformation. The essay outlines how these lectures, which sought to improve the life of the Christian, also provide valuable insights into the apostolic activity of the Society of Jesus in its early years during this complex historical period.
