Description
Summary:This article aims to examine the list of books held in the Jesuit reduction of Candelaria, the administrative centre of the Guarani missions. The inventory prepared after the expulsion of the Jesuits from the Hispanic territories (1767) is used for this purpose. In the first part of the text, the information extracted from this source will be processed quantitatively; graphs present the institutional provenance, year of death of the authors - both from the library and the Jesuits' private chambers - as well as the format and subject of the books. The quantitative approach is then complemented with a qualitative analysis. For this purpose, the classification of the books and the organization of the inventory are examined as expressions of a particular conception of knowledge. Subsequently, the focus turns to missionary knowledge or knowledge of conversion, i.e., knowledge directly related to the missionary context and practice, including in the scientific, linguistic and moral-theological spheres. Finally, a brief conclusion points to future research directions in the history of reading in the Jesuit reductions. (English)
