Until then the structure of the vast majority of the monastic networks was constituted by a central abbey with a conspicuous number of dependent structures. Even abbeys were among the subject communities. The head of this monastic network became in this case a sort of abbot of abbots, abbas abbatum, with the function of correcting the subordinate abbots. Under the influence of the Gregorian reform, during the papacies of Urban II and Paschal II, substantial changes were affecting the relations between bishops and abbots and between abbots and their subordinate abbots. One can observe these changes in action. This article will focus in particular on the relationship between the abbey of Marmoutier in the diocese of Tours and the abbeys of St Florentin of Bonneval and St Remi of Reims in the last decades of the eleventh century.
