| Summary: | Le présent article étudie le chapitre canonial Saint-Ursmer de Lobbes que, pendant des siècles, l'historiographie a négligé au profit de sa puissante voisine, l'abbaye Saint-Pierre. Les archives de cette dernière contiennent quantité d'actes inédits qui permettent de jeter quelque lumière sur plusieurs aspects encore inconnus ou méconnus de la vie du chapitre. Évidemment, l'origine même de ces documents a orienté nos investigations vers l'étude des relations entre le chapitre Saint-Ursmer et l'abbaye Saint-Pierre. Ce faisant, nous avons eu l'occasion d'inscrire nos recherches dans la lignée de l'étude fondatrice proposée par dom Daniel Misonne à la Mendola en 1959 et republiée dans la Revue Bénédictine en 2001. Nous avons ainsi pu constater que les relations entre l'abbaye Saint-Pierre et le chapitre Saint-Ursmer furent particulièrement tendues dès la seconde moitié du XIe siècle, soit une centaine d'années seulement après la fondation du chapitre, et que ces tensions sont demeurées vives jusqu'à la fin du Moyen Âge, voire de l'Ancien Régime. Et pourtant, malgré la puissance de l'abbaye et le soutien que lui ont apporté les papes, les archevêques de Reims et les évêques de Cambrai et de Liège, les chanoines sont parvenus à tirer parti des jeux politiques complexes qui marquaient la région pour résister efficacement aux moines. This paper studies the secular chapter of St Ursmar in Lobbes, which for centuries, historiography has neglected, since historians have focused their attention on its powerful neighbor, the abbey of St Peter. The archives of the latter contain many unpublished charters which enabled me to shed some light on several aspects of the chapter's history. Obviously, the very origin of these documents has oriented my investigations towards the study of the relations between the chapter of St Ursmar and the abbey of St Peter. In doing so I had the opportunity to put my research in line with the seminal work presented by dom Daniel Misonne at the Mendola symposium in 1959 and republished by the Revue Bénédictine in 2001. So, I have noticed that the relation between the chapter of St Ursmar and the abbey of St Peter was particularly tense from the second half of the eleventh century - only about a hundred years after the foundation of the chapter. These tensions remained strong until the end of the Middle Age, nay of the Ancien Regime. Yet despite the power of the abbey and the support given to it by the popes, the archbishops of Reims and the bishops of Cambrai and Liège, the canons were able to take advantage of the complex political circumstances that characterized the region to efficiently resist the monks. |
